Downtown Design & Editions 2022, Dubai

Showcase Highlights

At Downtown Design & Editions 2022, Baaya Design presented Collezione Marine Drive, a collaboration between Italian designer Mario Gagliardi and Baaya Design. The showcase celebrated the confluence of Indian artisanal mastery and Italian minimalism, unveiled amidst the global design stage of Dubai Design Week.

Collezione Marine Drive is a cross-cultural collection that brings together the best of both worlds, Italian design precision and Indian artisanal mastery. Inspired by Mumbai’s seascape, each piece captures the city’s rhythm and reflection through hand-carved wood, Pitara brass work, and inlay detailing. Designed by Mario Gagliardi and handcrafted by Shibani Dasgupta Jain, the collection reimagines luxury as a dialogue between minimalism, materiality, and craft.

Città Cabinet

Città is a magical city with diverse and intriguing facades. Modular in form, it’s designed to adapt to different scales and configurations. Both functional and elegant, it transforms seamlessly to fit multiple spaces and requirements.

Luna Lamp

Luna is the moon, casting mysterious specks of light across its landscape. Crafted with a faceted teak wood base and a brushed brass shade, this lamp brings a soft, celestial glow to any interior.

Fratello Lounge Chair

Fratello embodies Bauhaus-inspired geometry, bold, minimal, and modern. Its three-dimensional form showcases exceptional wood craftsmanship. With plush seating and refined fabrics, Fratello stands as a sculptural expression of comfort and form.

Isole Table

Isole, meaning “islands,” speaks of connection and togetherness. The organic base with Tarkashi wirework inlaid topallows each table to connect seamlessly, forming pathways that flow like line art, a reminder to connect, not isolate.

Nuvole Shelf

Nuvole, clouds drifting across the sky. Crafted from heavy-grained teak, this sculptural shelving piece features organic contours, evoking the rhythm and calm of drifting clouds.

Galleria Mirror

Galleria is a reflection of you — showing you in the best light. With a faceted teak wood base and a brushed brass frame, this piece brings warmth, sophistication, and a touch of understated glamour to modern interiors.

Paravento Screen

Paravento is the nightly sky, a screen with many planets. This visual membrane offers glimpses when open and privacy when closed. Made from Birchwood and Pitara brass sheets, it plays with matte and glossshow and hide, like moonlight filtering through clouds.

Quadrifoglio Tables

Quadrifoglio, Italian for “four-leaf clover,” is a Celtic emblem of hope, love, and luck. A marriage of form and craft, its contemporary structure features a geometric Tarkashi-patterned top, celebrating precision and grace through brass inlay craftsmanship.

Design Narrative & Material Language

Collezione Marine Drive explored what contemporary luxury can mean when rooted in craft. The material palette reflected restraint and precision, teak, brass, and hand-inlaid metalwork, elevated through Italian sensibility and Baaya’s artisanal depth.

This showcase was an exploration of cross-cultural craftsmanship, where design becomes dialogue.

Visitor Experience & Impact

At Downtown Design, the installation drew attention for its quiet elegance and narrative depth. Designers, architects, and collectors alike resonated with its cross-continental story, India’s craft intelligence meeting Italy’s poetic design thinking.

The collaboration positioned Baaya Design as a global advocate for contemporary craft, reinterpreting Indian artistry within a universal design language.
