Working with Incubis Consultants + Architects, Baaya Design created culturally immersive installations at Lucknow Airport – Terminal 3. The installations are designed to enrich the visual and cultural experience of both international and domestic passengers, fostering a deeper connection with the heritage of Uttar Pradesh. The visual vocabulary celebrates textile techniques, such as Chikankari, Zardozi, Ari work & carpet weaving, and evokes the sights, sounds, and tales of the land.

Ghats of Varanasi

MDF Acrylic Installation 

This artistic rendition of the Ghats integrates multiple mediums including high-quality MDF, acrylic, and wood. It brings to life the essence of the Ghats, the pulsating, cultural epicentre of Varanasi.

The installation captures the spiritual and historical significance of various Ghats along the Ganges. Each Ghat, from Assi Ghat in Varanasi to Ram Ghat in Chitrakoot, tells its own story, on carved panels using CNC carving techniques and enhanced with gold leafing.

Materials Used:
The primary materials include Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) for versatility and durability, and acrylic to mimic the reflective properties of water.

Techniques:
The artwork utilizes CNC craving for precision alongside hand sculpturing to highlight the fine details of the temple tops and ghats.

Textile Mural Installation 

This is an expansive artistic fabric installation that showcases the traditional textile craftsmanship of Uttar Pradesh. Spanning a stretch of wall space, it uses various textile techniques to delineate the cultural fabric of the region.

Reflecting the rich textile heritage, the mural showcases appliqué, quilting, patchwork, and embroidery,  each piece telling a part of the larger story of Uttar Pradesh’s cultural tapestry.

Materials Used:
A variety of fabrics sourced from Uttar Pradesh, known for their vibrant colours and intricate patterns.

Techniques
The mural integrates appliqué, fabric layering, handwork, embroidery, and patchwork.

This installation aims to create a welcoming and intriguing point of interest for international travelers, making their wait times more enjoyable and informative, offering insights into the local culture through the lens of its textile legacy.
