A wall can do much more than form the edge of a room. It can hold a story, introduce rhythm or change how light moves through an interior. Decorative wall panels and wall murals both offer these possibilities. Choosing between them begins with understanding the effect you want to create and how the artwork will relate to the architecture.
What is the difference?
Decorative wall panels are often designed as individual or repeated surface elements. Their appeal may lie in texture, material, relief or pattern. A wall mural is usually conceived as a composition across a wall or a substantial part of it. It may depict a scene, develop an abstract narrative or bring together several materials. The categories can overlap. A mural may be assembled from panels, while a single decorative panel can function as an artwork. The useful question is how you want the wall to be experienced.
Choose panels when material and rhythm lead the design
Panels can work well when the intention is to introduce a repeated pattern, define an architectural zone or create a tactile backdrop. Think of the subtle variation of wood veneer, the raised detail of metalwork or the colour of copper enamel. Repetition can create continuity, while a single panel can give a smaller area a distinct identity. Baaya’s collection includes surface explorations such as the Pitara Horizon Panel and Tessella Copper Enamel Panel. Each offers a different way to approach texture and composition.
Choose a mural when the wall needs a story
A mural can become the central visual experience of a room. It may draw on landscape, cultural references, personal history or the character of a place. Consider what sits around it. Furniture, doorways and lighting can interrupt the composition, so the artwork should be planned with those elements in view. In an open-plan space, a mural can also establish a focal point that helps one area feel distinct.
Compare installation and care early
Neither format is automatically easier to install or maintain. Ask about the wall substrate, artwork weight, fixing method and access requirements. If future relocation matters, discuss this before the design is finalised; a panel is not necessarily removable without specialist work. Care requirements depend on the actual materials and finishes, not simply whether the work is called a panel or mural.
Let the architecture guide the choice
