Commissioning custom wall art begins with an opportunity: to create something that belongs to your space in a way an off-the-shelf choice may not. You might have a clear idea, a personal story or simply a wall that needs attention. A useful brief can begin with any of these. What matters is bringing together the information that will help the design develop.
Begin with the experience you want to create
Describe the mood and purpose before deciding on a technique. Should the artwork make an entrance feel welcoming? Bring a sense of calm to a living room? Express the identity of a workplace? References can help, but explain what attracts you to them. It might be their colour, composition, texture or scale rather than the artwork as a whole. This gives the studio room to interpret your intention.
Share the architectural context
Provide wall measurements, photographs and, where available, elevations or floor plans. Include nearby furniture, openings, switches, air-conditioning outlets and lighting positions. For a property under construction, indicate which dimensions are confirmed and which may change. The surrounding finishes matter too. A material palette helps the studio consider whether the artwork should introduce contrast or create continuity.
Discuss budget and timing openly
An indicative budget helps establish a realistic direction. Ask what the quotation includes, such as design development, samples, production, packing, transport and installation. Share the date by which the artwork needs to be installed, along with any restrictions on site access. Production timing should be confirmed against the agreed design and approval schedule.
Review the concept and material samples
Drawings and visualisations help communicate composition. Samples help you understand colour, texture and finish. Where possible, assess samples alongside the actual interior materials and under relevant lighting. A reflective surface may behave differently in daylight and evening light. Agree on approval stages and how later changes will be handled before production begins.
Plan installation as part of the commission
Confirm who will check the supporting wall, arrange access and coordinate with the contractor. Large or heavy pieces may need specialist fixing and handling. For illuminated work, electrical coordination should happen early enough to avoid awkward changes after finishes are complete. At handover, request care instructions suited to the finished materials.
